PTO Fundraiser Kickoff
On Friday, September 16, Maple Grove had its PTO Fundraiser Kickoff! The students all raised their hands when asked if someone they know does laundry, uses trash bags, and they were especially excited about the cookie dough! Sales end Monday, September 26! Sell, sell, sell, so we can fund more fun things like author visits, playground games, and Star Olympics!
Fall Book Fair
The Fall Book Fair took place from September 30-October 6. We are pleased to report that every classroom library benefited from the fair along with the media center. As you know, book fair is not a fundraiser but all students benefit from it through the profit of free books. All of the 31 classrooms plus the essential skills team and learning support team each received $125 in books. That is $4,125! The media center received approximately $2,000 in books. PTO was also able to purchase books for the author/illustrator visit, totaling $1,750. Every student received a copy of an A to Z Mysteries book! That's $7,875 in free books from this fair! Wow!!
It was the PTO’s pleasure to host author and illustrator John Steven Gurney on Thursday, October 27. Gurney has illustrated more than 100 books for children, including all of the titles in the A to Z Mysteries. He is the author and illustrator of Dinosaur Train and Fuzzy Baseball. Gurney not only spoke with the whole school for a convocation on the writing and illustration process, but also went to each classroom for pictures. He walked through the process from receiving the book idea, to submitting the first sketch to the editor, revised sketches, to the final title illustration. He was humorous and intuitive with the kids and drew animals made out of 5 different types of animals of their choice! He inspired children and adults to never give up, your first try won’t always be a success and those who provide you with criticism are helping you to grow. PTO provided every student with a book and all 5th graders were able to meet Gurney and have their books autographed – a Maple Grove tradition!
